63 - Through The Long Nights

The various “Track It Down” mixes I’ve made have been based on my purchases at – wait for it – http://trackitdown.com. At the start of the year I bought a large quantity of music from them – an accumulation of songs I’d liked from A State Of Trance, Corsten’s Countdown, recommendations and other sources.

It’s always good to work with a larger quantity of music – the more you have, the more chance you have that two tracks will go well together, or that you can find a way to move from one key to another. In the more constrained mixes I’ve made – the Top Thirty for example – I’ve had more trouble trying to get the music to seamlessly blend from one track to the next, and that’s always my goal.

But the scale of this task somewhat daunted me. Trying to arrange the tracks into groups of the same key was time consuming enough. Listening through every transition, as I try to do to make sure there are no beat clashes, takes at least half an hour even when I’m rushing it. I’ve had to listen to it for days – a pleasurable task, but still – just to make sure that I hadn’t missed anything obviously out of place or broken.

The size of the project had another somewhat expected hitch: I export the mix from MixMeister into raw WAV file, which has a format limit of 4GB or about 6 hours of standard 44.1K 16-bit PCM. In order to get this mix in one piece, I had to write it as two separate halves, import them into Audacity, clip them off so they swapped from one to the other, and then export it as a FLAC file.

But it was great – the whole first hour is something I could listen to many times and still enjoy it. There are many favourite tracks in here, so even in the last hour there’s still music that energises me.

I welcome any suggestions, criticisms and recommendations for new music to listen to. I will consider doing specific mixes for people, but this is only a hobby. Hope to hear from you.
